Read to Me, Talk to Me, Sing to Me! |

The Burlington Public Library's Babies Need Books program began in 1993 with one purpose in mind--to encourage new parents to read to their young children early and often. This program is now in its 15th year and continues to provides every new parent who has a child born at Great River Medical Center with a new board book for their baby and a coupon to be redeemed at the library for a "Read to Me" t-shirt. With the t-shirt comes a packet of materials which includes tips on reading to infants, information on early literacy and library programs that are designed for infants and toddlers. It has been shown that the single most important activity for building the knowledge for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to your child for at least fifteen minutes a day. When you READ TO ME, I learn about books! When you TALK TO ME, I learn about language! When you SING TO ME, I learn about rhymes! Reading, talking, and singing are all the steps to early literacy!
