The Burlington Public Library Foundation is sponsoring its twelfth annual Genealogy Workshop on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Burlington Public Library at 210 Court Street. A new feature this year is an additional chance to hear the guest speaker and professional genealogist on Friday night at a dessert presentation. On Friday, April 11, doors at the library will open at 6:30 for desserts with the speaker presenting at 7.
The 2014 speaker is John Philip Colletta, PhD. Based in Washington, D.C., Dr. Colletta is nationally known genealogy speaker and instructor. He is a faculty member at both the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research at Samford University in Alabama and at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy in Utah. He is also an author of two genealogy manuals: “They Came in Ships: A Guide to Finding Your Immigrant Ancestor’s Arrival Record” and “Finding Italian Roots: The Complete Guide for Americans.” He also drew upon his family research to write a murder mystery family history, “Only a Few Bones: A True Account of the Rolling Fork Tragedy and Its Aftermath.”
At Friday night’s dessert presentation, Dr. Colletta will present “Is Any Body There? – Tracking Ancestral Remains.” On Saturday, he will give four sessions: “Lesser-Used Federal Records: Sources of Rich Detail about Ancestors’ Lives,” “Breaking Through Brick Walls: Use Your HEAD!,” “Our National Archives: The Astounding Institution and How to Use It,” and “How to Prepare for Successful Research in European Records.”
Thanks to the Library Foundation’s sponsorship and a grant from the Great Burlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, registration for the Friday program is only $8 and the Saturday workshop is only $15. People who sign up for both will get admission at a discount and pay only $20 for both days. For Saturday’s workshop, lunch will be provided along with a packet of handouts. Call the Burlington Public Library at 319-753-1647 or visit www.burlington.lib.ia.us for more information and to register. Seating is limited and advance reservations are required.
